I am going to school to become certified in Medical Coding. I am wondering how hard it is to find a job upon graduating in the Houston area. Also, what am I looking at as starting salary? Anyone a coder in the Houston area?

A: That depends on wheter you want to work for the state, your local county of the Federal government. If you want to work for the federal government , check out this website: http://usajobs.opm.gov. Q: Medical Coding jobs...in demand???
I just signed up for a medical coding certificate program ..and today I was looking at jobs and I didnt see even one that didnt require atleast (1) year of previous coding experience..I was told Medical coders are very high in demand?? so why are employers requiring this experience..how am I able to get experience w/out anyone giving me a chance to gain it?? Is a Medical coding certificate going to be a waste of my time?

A: I've actually heard that medical coders are Not that much in demand as medical billers and med assistants aren't either per these boards and elsewhere including my cousin who works in medical billing. For coders, the field usually likes someone with a couple years experience doing coding tasks (if can find work :) and who has passed their certification exam(s). If deciding to sign up with a program, please opt for the lesser expensive one such as thru the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) so that one is not so in debt if can't find employment. (Those coding/allied health schools will say anything to get students to register, but there are so many programs out there and not enough jobs for when they graduate.) Q: Anyone know where I can find legitimate web-based medical coding jobs?

A: You can use the site below to search. There are lots of reputable colleges and universities that offer that course online.

Q: Medical coding jobs in demand?
My boyfriend is considering whether to enroll in a program at miami dade community college for medical coding and billing. He has been working at a hospital in admitting for the past two years. The problem is he has been finding out that there are ppl who work with him in admitting that are certified to be medical coders and they work there because they couldnt find jobs. So my question is will he be able to find jobs in this field? He does however have advantages over his coworkers who are certified because they're older and had familys to support so they didn't have much oppurtunity to get into the field. Also, my boyfriend will have more education than them since is almost done completing his general AA degree and plans to do the program afterwards. ....Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!

A: I used to live in Miami-Dade county! Okay here's the thing- there ARE many jobs in that area for doctor's office medical coding/billing jobs. That is doing OUTPATIENT coding. One can go through vocational training either online (www.mtacc.net) or through a course like Miami-dade CC has and work in a doctor's office. Without an AHIMA credential the pay is about $12 an hour. With an AHIMA credential the pay would be a lot higher and w/ experience even higher. Now, hospital jobs are HARDER to get because most in Dade want the CPC credential which you cannot sit for until you have experience, but how does one get hospital coding experience when they won't hire w/o the credential??? This is why your bf is working in admitting w/ a bunch of people who've trained in coding. They are hoping to somehow work their way into the coding department. Having said all this, hospital coding jobs are SWEET in regard to benefits, pay, etc. I hope this info helps. It comes from my head working in this business.

Q: Where do I go to look for medical coding jobs?

A: I used to be a medical coder in a local hospital. I would either check with them or a doctor's office. I know in the hospital setting you have various positions--inpatient, outpatient, emergency room visits, etc so it may offer more of a variety and skill level.

Q: medical coding jobs?
I live in SC and I am interested in taking a medical coding course. I've heard various stories about medical coding being in demand and I hear some say that they are not in demand. Can anyone offer any insight?

A: i am in a 9 month certificate program right now to be a medical biller/coder. the thing they don't tell you when you start the school is that you can't code with just a certificate, you need to be accredited (which is a very hard and expensive test). Start looking around at www.ahima.org. they will give you a list of schools that are accredited by AHIMA (AHIMA is the organization which has the best accreditations) and it will tell you more about the career. when looking at schools MAKE SURE THEY TELL YOU THEY WILL FIND YOU A JOB AND INTERNSHIP!!!! if they dont, dont even bother going there. it will be impossible to find a job without help of a school. the job of a medical coder IS in demand, but the demand is for experienced and accredited people, since being a coder is a very important job so the hospital will get paid. but if you know your stuff and pass the test, It definitely pays off in the end. it has good job security and you can end up making a LOT of money :) just make sure to check out your schools carefully.

Q: What does the future look like for jobs in Medical Coding and Billing?

A: Medical Coding is a top paying field that is around to stay. Due to many Medicare/Medicad regulations, HIPPA, and the presidents move to make all medical records on-line this makes coders valuable. As long as you have hospitals and doctors, coders will be needed.
