Q: Marketing, Advertising jobs working on ad campaign ideas, slogans... creative thinking.?
I'm about to graduate from cleveland state this december with a marketing degree. I love the creativity involved, coming up with ad campaigns, slogans, brand identities... think on your feet, working within a team, presenting your ideas to prospective clients and all that. For each of my past bout 5 classes our semester project was to break into teams and come up with a comprehensive ad campaigh for a specified company... I loved it and always seemed to do great. The problem is i can't seem to find a job that entailes those aspects of marketing. All i seem to find are jobs doing door to door sales, brand sales reps, and mortgage borking. I want to find a job working for a company that is contracted out by other companys to come up with ideas for their marketing needs. To be creative and be rewarded for such. Is this just a pipe dream... do such jobs exist, and if so where do i find them? Would going to a head hunter be a good idea? Also i wouldn't mind relocating at all. I've had about two years experience in sales. In home, face to face, over the phone, b2b just about every aspect. I don't have much experience in marketing but feel i still have alot to offer. I like the idea of an internship, and am financially stable enough to work a few months without pay but at the same time i really want to start making money. How would a company react if i called or went to the office and asked to do an internship? Isn't that something they need to advertise for... or would they be willing to just give some guy a chance? Also i'm still at a lose... not sure what credentials to look for in a company. I would like to find one that has what i stated above but what are those companies called ad agencies... what should i ask for to narrow it down? Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass but i'm new at this stuff i feel like i'm being thrown in with the sharks blind... and wishing i wouldve started searching earlier.

A: You are facing the issue many new college graduates face. You have the motivation and the heart for what you really want to do. However, you don't have the experience. When it comes to marketing, there are many different aspects. Sales. Creative. Research. To be an effective marketer, you will need to develop skills in all areas. It sounds to me though, like you are finding sales jobs (which are typically easier to find), when what you want is to start in a position requiring more creativity. I was a marketing director for a financial institution for 20 years, and I hired several students right out of college for my team. They had worked for me as interns during college though. I know many ad agencies do the same. Did you do an internship while in college? I don't know what your financial situation is, but could you offer to serve a several month internship at a company where you would really like to get your foot in the door? That would give you the opportunity to show them what you can do. If that just isn't a possibility, target the businesses where you would like to work. Ad agencies seem logical for the type of work you're seeking. Possibilities you may not have considered are companies with in-house marketing departments or directors. Even if you're the lone marketing person in a company, you would still have the team collaboration with other departments in your company. Consider banks and credit unions. Hospitals. Auto dealerships. Hotels. Non-profit organizations. Even if you don't want to make a career at one of these companies, it will give you a start. Make sure you have a portfolio of your work when you interview, to show your creative ability. If you REALLY want to make an impression, come up with a sample campaign for that company and include it in your portfolio. If you do this, just make sure it is an excellent campaign. For the type of work you are wanting to do, you are going to have to make some extra effort to prove yourself. There are too many "creative marketers" who have gone before you who have already proven themselves and are after the same jobs. I don't think you need a headhunter. You need to take a step back and develop a marketing plan for yourself! What types of companies do you want to target? What sets you apart (USP)? (Dont' just tell them, show them.) Start to network. Pick up the phone and start calling marketing directors in your area as well as those who may be in areas where you want to relocate. As you talk to marketing directors, they may not have an opening but they may know someone who does. Don't be pushy, just ask if they know of any entry-level positions. By doing this you are also showing your initiative and sales side, which may be just enough to get your foot in the door.

Q: How easy is it to transfer jobs (advertising/marketing) from UK to Oz? Has anyone experience of this?
I am marrying an Aussie girl in November (I'm British) and we intend to emigrate in July 2008. We purchased a unit/flat in Manly on our last visit in Dec 2006, so no worries on that score... it's just the employment side that I'm not sure about. Also, any tips re which visa to apply for eg spouse, working etc? Australia is a fantastic place and I can't wait to get over there - great people with a fantastic 'up-for-it' attitude and a climate that is perfect for sport lovers everywhere (me being one of them)... though UK is pretty special too when the sun shines. Thanks!

A: Hello there I moved out to Melbourne from England 4 years ago on an Interdependant Partner visa (My (now) fiance is an Aussie and I myself am the Pom) I think you will be best going for the spouse visa if you will be married when you intend to move. Also I agree with the above answer, best to get your application moving pretty quick just in case there are any delays in processing it. Good Luck and have fun in the Lucky Country. (ooh another hot tip - buy a webcam when you get here it is much cheaper when trying to stay in touch with the rellies back home and if you like bacon - eat your fill before you come over.... all we have here is already smoked.... mmm bacon butty I can taste it now - ha ha!)

Q: How do kids right out of school with no marketing/advertising experience get decent jobs?
I graduated recently with a degree in marketing and have many years of professional experience in another area but would like to do marketing/advertising. Now in my experience firms are looking for qualified marketers, etc. But if kids can get hired with no experience, then it seems as though I could too. But aren't their resumes blank?

A: The best way to network would have been through internships. Companies usually pay close attention to the interns, for employ ability.

Q: What college should I go to to get a marketing/advertising job?
What degree should I get? I want to be the person who makes the billboards, magazine ads, and television commercials. What would be the best route of education to take? I am currently in high school.

A: Many journalism schools within universities have two tracts- professional journalism and professional strategic communications. The second then usually divides itself into a focus on either PR or advertising. A degree like this would help you get an account executive or media position within an ad agency. To get into creative- like you have mentioned- is trickier. Everyone wants to be the creative in the ad industry. You can try taking it head on by getting a graphics art degree or majoring in film production. To write the ads- you would want to become a copy writer- here a creative writing/journalism background would help. A lot of people try to simply get into an ad agency, in any position, and then from there they try to prove how creative they are. Check out journalism/writing degrees, look at art schools with graphic design degrees, and read adage.com to get an idea of what the industry is like.

Q: Can you still get bussiness type jobs (advertising, marketing, accounting) with a major in economics?

A: If you want to go into accounting - get a degree in that field followed up by a cpa. BTW Cpa's can make good money these days.

Q: I just graduated from uni and am looking for marketing/advertising job in london-suggestions?
I graduated with 2.1 but havent had any luck getting on graduate schemes - any one have any ideas?

A: have you tried barclays graduate scheme? or hsbc's? otherwise you could try checking the broadsheets - guardian or times for graduate vacancies. write off to as many companies as possible with your CV, even if they're not advertising vacancies. dont give up - you may get a hell of alot of rejections as alot of graduates do, but keep trying and dont take it personally.

Q: Is the field of advertising better than marketing??
HI every 1, im a student of MA Advertising & Marketing....just completed my 1st semester studying advertising and found it damn interesting....but unfortunately dont think is enough to apply for an advertising job. in the 2nd semester will be studying marketing...Ive always been in sales and marketing jobs but dont like it anymore. im thinking to transfer to some other uni and take up a course that by the end of it would give me the confidence to actualy apply for jobs in this field....can any1 suggest the kinda course i sould be looking for (MA ?)...

A: Knowing marketing really helps in the ad field. Consumer behavior, group psychology, etc. are helpful, as are presentation skills, writing, graphic design elements, a little technology.

Q: Where is the best place online to look for well paid jobs in media, marketing, advertising, sales etc?
