A: The research methods used for the primary market research is identical to social science quantitative research methods. If you have a good foundation in methods and statistics, there's nothing holding you back from a career at a market research company.
Q: Anyone have some advice for getting an entry-level job in market research?
I have a B.A. in Diplomacy & Foreign Affairs from a top school and much of my experience has been in sales and politics. I want to transition into market research because my true interests lie in problem solving, statistics, consumer behavior, formulating strategies, etc. Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
A: Given that you are not truly entry-level, I would suggest that you use your personal and business network to help with your job search. Networking is often the best tool for switching career. Colleagues are not threaten because you are not competing in the same field as they are and often very willing to introduce you to their friends.
The second approach is to identify a list of market research companies where you want to work, i.e. Forrester, Gardener's, Reuters etc. Then market your skills to them.
The third approach is look for job openings online. You can do keyword searches like Market research job. This probably lead you to mostly job boards, some professional organizations' job listings or some direct company hires.
Best wishes.
Q: Can market research professionals help me get into this field?
I have a master's degree in international business from UK and currently live in california. Also I have taken a course in market research online. I want to know what skills are required to get into this field as I am a fresher. I specially wnat to know what mathematical skills I need to work in for quantitative analysis in this field. How is the job market for this field? What is SAS SPSS and how do I get some training in it? Basically I need some help to get started in just the right way and get job offers and do well in it. I know zilch about this.
A: I was once a market researcher myself specializing in accounts involving quantitative research projects for both local and multinational companies. In market research, one should have a vast knowledge of social sciences, the different business industries, research techniques, and should know how to make use of the internet. Market research is also project management. Aside from the skills, one should have initiative, coordination skills, multi-tasking capabilities and knows how to be a part of a team.
Basic mathematical skills are not really required. But the knowledge on the basics of Statistics is a must. There are a lot of statistical softwares available at the disposal of a researcher. It is more reliable than doing the analysis manually but the knowledge of Statistics would greatly help in the interpretation of the data. Knowing your data, how it skews and all that would also help you to design better systems in conducting your study. This is so because there are times that you have to decide what statistical tools to use and how you would conduct your surveys.
SAS and SPSS are two different statistical softwares that are commonly used by researchers. Quantitative analysis is made easy with these softwares because upon the input of the data, the software itself could automatically generate reports both descriptive and inferential depending on what statistical test you want to apply data. Tutorials are also included in the software as well as found online (http://home.ubalt.edu/ntsbarsh/stat-data/SPSSSAS.htm). It is very user friendly and it is made more easier if you already have a background in Statistics.
There is certainly a lot of opportunities in the market research industry. In the US, according to the Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics there were 22,000 jobs for the said industry. By 2014, it is expected that the employment of market and survey researchers would grow faster than average for all occupations.
All in all, I think it is not only the preparation of the knowledge and the skills that would fit you in market research. Because with your having a Master’s Degree as well as the skills you acquired through the years would really prove invaluable. But it is your commitment and passion for research that would really drive you to succeed in this industry. ***
Q: How do i find which are the top ten market research firms?
Please also tell me how to do SWOT analysis of a market research firm? And what are the things i should consider learning when i try to find a job in a market research firm?
A: Lots of SWOT references here...good luck!
Q: market research companies in the UK?
I am in my final year looking for graduate jobs in market research. I realize that most firms/agencies are based in London. I do not have the desire to relocate to London (heard horrible stories about the living expenses and housing condition). Are there any market research companies in Edinburgh that you would recommend? Thanks in advance.
A: With respects, if you're in your final year at uni you should have a careers service which will have a database of all the local jobs and will continue to see you a year or two after you graduate. If there are up and coming market research companies that are not yet on the database I suggest that local networking is a better way to find out about them than YA. My daughter did part-time evening bar jobs and got an awful lot of sensible admin work contacts that way. It shouldn't take you a few minutes otherwise to do a Google search for the major market research companies to see if they have branches in Scotland. Good luck!
Q: What marketing research job should I get? 10 points to best answer.?
I love the actual data gathering part of marketing research. I love doing surveys and using the data from those surveys to make charts & graphs. Most importantly, I HATE public speaking. I have 5 years of college under my belt and I feel as though my public speaking skills have gotten even worse. Even talking in front of small groups of say 3-5 people is hard for me.
My question is this: Are there any jobs in Marketing Research that don't require public speaking? Thanks a bunch.
A: You sound like you would love a job on the QUANTITATIVE side of market research. Market research analysts work with the data and turn the numbers into easily understood charts and graphs.
CASRO is the leading U.S. market research organization. They predict a growing need for market research analysts.
Check out the CASRO website for jobs. Other good websites include Quirks and the American Marketing Association (marketingpower). For global opportunities, check out ESOMAR.
Q: How is the job market for marketing research in the Dallas, TX area?
At least without an MBA. I know Frito hires, but they want MBAs (:rolls eyes:)
A: It's gotta be pretty good. Its rated one of the fastest growing cities in the country.
Q: HR or Market research? which career path should i take?
I recently graduated with my master's degree in industrial and organizational psychology (applied social psychology). I really like Training and Development, and ultimately want to end up in that feild. But right now I have Market Research experience so I am having more luck finding Market Research analyst positions than HR positions. All the HR positions require at least 2 years experience and still pay low (even for someone with an M.A.). Should I look for market research jobs now and see if I can apply market research experience to HR further down the line?
A: What's your main priority? Money, career, easy life?
If you prefer an easier life and lesser money as your mentioned, then just go HR.
I think with market research job, you'll get to developed your career further especially when you are out in the field, your opportunity of meeting more people would give you better chance of achieving goals in life. These people you meet might even help you in future, in case you really decided to move to a HR job. If you would to work as a HR now, you'll end up looking at the same faces and newcomers but when you wanna get a new job, you'll need to go through the whole process of applying and waiting.
I feel that market research would be a more challenging and a less routine job also.
So ask yourself honestly what you want.
Q: Market Research Job? Why i'm finding it difficult to get one...?
Having done MBA in International Business, why i'm finding it difficult to get a market research job? Is anyone having contact then pls let me know...
A: This is more a career-type question; however, it's the old adage, it takes experience to get experience...you might try offering to do some pro-bono (free) work for non-profits, churches or schools in your area. Go down to your local Chamber of Commerce and sign up for some activities...meet people who are doing the job you'd like to do. Hope this helps and good luck with the job hunt!
